Today you will travel to the sandstone country of Nitmiluk National Park. The land was recently returned to its traditional owners, the Jawoyn people, an Aboriginal group whose ancestors are said to have lived in the area for up to 45,000 years. The name ‘Nitmiluk’ translates to ‘place of cicada dreaming’ which nods to the culture and ceremonial history of the land. You’ll explore the rugged beauty of Nitmiluk Gorge on a guided cruise. Winding down stretches of still tributaries and river rapids, you’ll admire the sandstone walls that tower up to 70 metres on either side. This area is rich in Indigenous history and serves as a home to ancient sites adorned with early Aboriginal art. If you’re lucky you may catch a glimpse of the artwork etched on the canvas of the walls. Continue to the remote town of Katherine, the gateway to the north, south, east and west.

On the journey to Kununurra, see Lake Argyle, coined the ‘jewel of the Kimberley’ and Australia’s largest man-made lake. Formed through the damming of the Ord River in the 1970s, this immense freshwater lake houses over 70 small islands and rocky outcrops. Later, join a wildlife cruise along a serene section of the Ord River. Stretching over 320-kilometres long and home to a unique ecosystem and an incredible array of wildlife, keep an eye out for crocodiles, short-eared rock wallabies and over 270 species of birds.

Later this afternoon, enjoy a leisurely cruise along Chamberlain Gorge, where the river carves a path through the sheer rock-face which is surrounded by a diverse range of native flora and fauna. Visit El Questro Station, the central hub of El Questro and enjoy the chance to relax by the Pentecost River. Take in the lush evergreen surrounds of the river that provide a stark difference to the ochre red of the Kimberley landscape. On your return to Emma Gorge Resort, enjoy a delightful dinner before retiring for the night.
